Southeastern Museum

An immersive Space that transforms ordinary trains into a place of mystery

Challenge

Understanding the older audience was key—they are the ones who hold the resources and can elevate the museum to new heights. By addressing their expectations upfront, we can build trust, enhance their experience, and transform skepticism into lasting support.

Research

Competitive Analysis

Based on our competitive analysis, we identified key areas where our competitors were lacking and discovered opportunities to differentiate our design and strategy.

Survey Insights

Surveyed the patrons of the museum to acquire valuable insights and make informed decisions. We found interaction was important to them when visiting museum.

Experience Ideation

We designed six unique characters, each representing a different era of the trains on display at the museum, bringing history to life and creating a deeper connection to the stories behind the locomotives.

The deep blues and golds were carefully chosen to evoke a sense of royalty, prestige, and timeless elegance. This rich color palette reflects the grandeur of history, drawing visitors into an experience that feels both majestic and immersive.

This layout guided visitors through the entire museum, ensuring they experienced its full range of historic trains. With such a vast space, many guests previously missed key exhibits—but our design encouraged complete exploration.

Rewiring the lights for Simon Says was a fun challenge, allowing me to blend technical problem-solving with interactive design. These elements added layers of engagement, encouraging visitors to actively connect with the museum's history in a fun and immersive way.

Conclusion

During this project, my primary responsibility was to design the game tasks that guided visitors through the experience. Leveraging my background in wayfinding, I also developed the layout to ensure seamless navigation. About three months after our redesign, the museum implemented updates that closely mirrored our design solutions, validating our research and design approach. Additionally, the museum is currently restructuring its volunteer group to implement this experience for Halloween 2026.
